Some exotic pet species moving internationally will need an import CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) permit from US Fish and Wildlife Service. You can check to see if your species is listed here – Species+ (speciesplus.net)

For pets subject to CITES regulations it takes 3-4 months to get US CITES Export Permit, another 30 days for corresponding destination country CITES import permit. You need to plan at least 5 months in advance of planned trip. THERE IS NO EXPEDITED OPTION FOR THE PERMIT ON US SIDE.

Some states in the US have restrictions on what exotic pets can be brought into their state. For example, Hawaii has a long list of prohibited species, while other states may require permits for certain animals. If you need assistance navigating the process of transporting your pet, Airborne Animals can help. They even offer pet shipping services to Puerto Rico.

Sure! Here are some popular types of exotic pets that are legal in the USA:

Bearded Dragons: These reptiles make excellent pets and are known for their docile nature and unique appearance.
Hedgehogs: Hedgehogs have gained popularity as pets due to their small size, low maintenance requirements, and adorable quills.
Sugar Gliders: These small, nocturnal marsupials are social animals that require special care but can make wonderful companions for experienced owners.
Ball Pythons: Considered one of the most popular pet snakes, ball pythons are known for their docile temperament and relatively small size.
Fennec Foxes: With their large ears and playful nature, fennec foxes have become a favorite among exotic pet enthusiasts. However, they require specialized care and attention.
Savannah Cats: Savannah cats are a hybrid breed created by crossing domestic cats with servals, resulting in a striking appearance and active personality. Also known as F5 breeds. To avoid CITES, you need proof of 5 Generations of breeding from wild.
Degus: These small rodents are social, intelligent, and relatively easy to care for, making them a popular choice for those looking for exotic pets.
Axolotls: Axolotls are unique aquatic salamanders known for their striking appearance and regenerative abilities, making them fascinating pets to keep.
Kinkajous: Kinkajous, also known as honey bears, are curious, tree-dwelling mammals that can form strong bonds with their owners.
Tarantulas: For arachnid enthusiasts, tarantulas are popular choices as pets. They come in various sizes and colors, and many species are relatively low-maintenance.

Remember, laws regarding exotic pets can vary by state, city, and sometimes even by specific breed. Make sure to research and adhere to the local regulations before considering any exotic pet.
